WISE ENOUGH TO PLAY THE FOOL

The director, Dr. Emily Rollie, on the interpretations of classical plays:

 

"I think that Shakespeare is still cool. There is, of course, a trend of layering a theme, esthetic, some sort of resetting of Shakespeare. And I think it can be useful in connection to a contemporary audience, who might be:

A) scared of Shakespeare;

B) tired of seeing something 'old'.

 

So, I think, it gives an audience a new way of seeing. My task as the director, though, is when you do that, you must think carefully, so that your concept, or the design you are layering on, actually speaks to the text and enhances it versus just look cool or interesting. And I think steam punk and 'Twelfth night' go well together."
